PONSSE Firefighting Equipment – Mobile Water Loading and Wildfire Suppression
PONSSE Firefighting Equipment is a mobile firefighting solution designed for forwarders operating in demanding forest terrain. The complete firefighting unit is installed in the forwarder’s load space and powered by the forest machine’s hydraulic system.
The system includes a 10,000-litre water tank that can be filled directly from a natural water source or from a fire truck. This allows the forwarder to operate as a mobile firefighting unit in locations where conventional fire trucks may have difficulty accessing water sources or the fire area.
Mäki-Reini has supplied hydraulic pumps for both water loading and firefighting functions in the solution. The loading pump enables the onboard water tank to be filled from natural water sources, while the firefighting pump provides the water flow required for fire suppression.
The application demonstrates an important advantage of hydraulically driven pumps in mobile emergency equipment: the pumps can use the base machine’s existing hydraulic power and become an integrated part of the complete system.
A practical example comes from Uruguay, where forestry company Montes del Plata operates several PONSSE firefighting units on Buffalo King forwarders. The equipment enables water to be transported through difficult terrain and the tank to be refilled directly from available natural water sources.
